Maarten Wetsema

Maarten Wetsema (1966, Uithoorn) has become known for his dog portraits. For this he carefully chooses the background and the furniture so that the dog fits perfectly into the picture.
For such photos he uses his own dogs as models, but he also portrays on assignment, taking hours to make portraits with the right postures, the right furniture and props and in the right place.

Wetsema is not the first to discover the pet as an object for attractive photos. The absolute pioneer in this field is the American William Wegman (1943), whose career is based entirely on endearing and often hilarious photos and videos of his own dogs.

Wetsema’s work is included in the collections of De Paviljoens, Akzo-Nobel and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among others. He lives and works in Arnhem.
