In 2008-2010 Jan Adriaans took photographs of almost empty garages in different places around the world, including Cairo and Rotterdam.

His observational style emphasises the existing lines, planes, materials and colours so that reflections on sheets of steel, a stroke of paint on the wall, or air bubbles in the concrete, all become worthy of the viewer’s attention.

The spaces, although different, are also ultimately the same, sharing certain characteristics that allow the viewer to recognize them as garages, even without the presence of cars. How much does one need to see of a space in order to know what kind of space it is?
The series, Garages, seems to be posing this question.
