In the studio of Sarah Carlier

Branches, sculptures and photographs. Visiting the studio of Sarah Carlier.

We visited artist Sara Carlier (pronounced Carlier so that it rhymes with dear) in her studio.
We spoke about her photo and video work. About construction kits and branches. But above all, we talked about her upcoming presentation of HOOVM, the Hague Organic Open Air Folk Museum, at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Sarah told us how this special museum came into being.

“When public life came to a standstill due to the Covid-19 pandemic, my daily walks with my dog in the woods (Het Haagse Bos, ed.) became increasingly important. It turned out that I was not the only one who sought escape in nature during this time. On my walking route, many constructions and sculptures made of moss, branches and leaves emerged. I thought of the poem by Joseph Beuys ‘Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler’ and decided to document everything on my route. I also started to play along with the anonymous makers. I marked branches and waited for someone or something to move them, I spied on people and kept a diary of each construction.”

Sarah coined her walking route through the woods The Hague Organic Open Air Folk Museum (HOOVM). Starting next Wednesday she will show her museum at THUAS.
